Frenkie de Jong insists that Barcelona are ‘not in a rut’, despite the Spanish club’s disastrous start to the 2021-22 campaign that has left Ronald Koeman’s job hanging by a thread.
Pressure is mounting on Koeman with the Dutchman overseeing a terrible opening few weeks to the season. Barca sit in ninth in LaLiga and are rooted to the bottom of their Champions League group after losing both of their games.
Reports from Spain had suggested that Barcelona chiefs were weighing up their options and it was a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’ Koeman would be sacked. However, president Joan Laporta has since made public his backing of the Dutch coach.

And Dutch midfielder De Jong maintains that the club is ‘not in a rut’ and the narrative that they are facing a crisis on the pitch is ‘exaggerated’.
‘It’s being exaggerated a lot, we’re not in a rut. The results are bad, no one can ignore that,’ said De Jong via Marca.
‘You can note a negative feeling around the club, which makes sense when you have bad results at a club like Barcelona.
‘I’m disappointed, but I’m not down.’

De Jong says the narrative is ‘exaggerated’ but the international break has come at a good time
De Jong added that the international break has come at the right time for the Spanish side – who have won two of their last eight games – but it is still too early to write them off as contenders for the LaLiga title.
‘It’s good we have the break now, if we go back to Barcelona games after the international games I think we could return to normality,’ said De Jong.
‘People are exaggerating when they say the season is already a write-off. We don’t have that many fewer points than Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, and there are a lot of games left to play.
‘So, nothing is lost, not at all. We started badly in the Champions League, but we still have every chance [of qualifying for the last 16].’
