The Blues were the front-runners to sign the defender, but Barca swooped in at the eleventh hour to make the Frenchman their fifth addition of the summer.
The saga comes after Andreas Christensen swapped West London for Barcelona earlier in the window, while the Blaugrana also sealed the signing of Brazilian winger Raphinha ahead of Thomas Tuchel’s side.
The defender revealed that Barcelona manager Xavi was a huge factor in his move to Catalona, saying: ‘Xavi is one of the big reasons why I am here too. I spoke with hum several times, the way he spoke was captivating.’
Barca announced that Kounde trained with his new club for the first time on Friday will be ‘officially presented’ behind closed doors on Monday.
