Average annual salary of engineering freshers increased by 15% in 5 yrs: Report

In India, a fresh engineering graduate was taking an average annual starting salary of 4.57 lakh last year, around 15% higher than the academic year 2020-21, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) report released by the Ministry of Education.

The Hindu Businessline analysis shows that the average annual salary of engineering freshers has increased by 43% in the last five years as an engineering graduate after passing out from college was earning around 3.19 lakh per annum in the academic year 2017-18

However, an engineering fresher who completed his graduation from one of the top 100 engineering colleges took an annual salary of 11.06 lakh in 2022, which accounts for about a 60% increase from the last five years. 

Of these, IIT Guwahati stands in the first position where a starting engineer’s salary was 22.5 lakh per year. Among IITs, an engineering fresher earned an average salary of 17 lakh per annum at IIT Madras, followed by 20.5 lakh at IIT Delhi, 18.8 lakh at IIT Bombay, and 20 lakh at IIT Hyderabad, The Hindu Businessline reported. 

The list of the top 100 engineering colleges includes 18 engineering colleges from Tamil Nadu, however, the average annual salary of graduates was comparatively low here. 

In addition, fresh engineering graduates earned the lowest salaries in a total of 10 colleges. Of these, six are from Tamil Nadu.

In the recently launched National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) declared by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the Institute has held 7th position in the ‘Engineering’ category and 9th position in ‘Overall’ and ‘Research’ Category in the country.

The institute has consistently maintained its high position in various national and international rankings.

QS World University Rankings 2024 released on June 27, 2023, indicates that since 2014, IIT Guwahati has improved its rank by at least 237 places from 601-650 range in 2014 to 364th in 2023.
