‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ grosses $515 Million at global box office on Day 5 – Times of India
The film which earned around $168 million at the domestic box office, earned another $346 million from a handful of overseas markets. According to trade reports, ‘The Way of Water’ has now grossed $515 million worldwide. The $500 million global gross puts it at number nine on the list of the highest-grossing films of the year.
Early predictions indicated that the film would cross the milestone in its first weekend. However, an underwhelming turnout coupled with mixed reviews crashed the film’s hopes for a record-breaking run at the box office.
Post the weekend, reports stated that the film witnessed a drop of up to 47% to 50%, which would translate to the film raking in an estimated Rs $65 – $80 million. If the film can maintain its pace at the box office, reports state that it could be on its way to a $250 million collection at the domestic box office.
Reports also state that the lower turnout in China took a major chunk out of the film’s box office collections. Said to be one of the film’s biggest international territories, China recorded collections of around $56 million. This is way lower than the $100 million collection the film was expected to earn on its opening weekend. The spike in Covid-19 cases and a lockdown in parts of the country are reported to be some of the reasons for the poor turnout.
Other major international markets raking in the big bucks for the film include South Korea ($24 million), France ($21 million), India and Germany ($19 million each).
So far, only Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion have managed to shoot past the $1 billion mark at the global box office this year.
‘The Way of Water’ is the sequel to the first ‘Avatar’, which was released in 2009. The original film went on to become the biggest box office hit in history. The film finished its domestic run with $760 million and currently has a total global gross of $2.9 billion after several re-releases.
