‘Avatar’ re-release eyes USD 7-12 million opening at box office – Times of India
Cameron’s science-fiction epic is poised to again blanket movie screens and transport willing travellers back, in 3-D, to the land of the Na’vi. But, a lot has changed since the original’s release. At the global press conference, Cameron revealed that the film will be released in a remastered, 4K, HDR version that he says is “better than it’s ever looked.”
This release comes just in time to whet moviegoers’ appetites ahead of the December 16 debut of the three-hour sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” — and remind them of a movie world they may have lost touch with.
Naturally, all eyes are now set on the box office performance this weekend, as this may serve as an indicator of the audience’s interest in the December release. According to reports on international portals, the current estimated collection for the film’s rerelease range from $7 million to $12 million. The numbers are said to be good, considering that this rerelease comes years after the original and will be the third release in certain parts of the globe (as the film was previously re-released to beat ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as the highest-grossing film of all time).
It’s also facing stiff competition from newer film releases over the weekend.
However, according to trade experts, a lot is riding on this film as it will act as a linchpin for what the future holds for the sci-fi adventure franchise.
‘Avatar’ ranks as the top-grossing film of all time with more than $2.8 billion in global ticket sales. Four ‘Avatar’ movies are planned through 2028.
The first sequel to the blockbuster movie will focus on the theme of protecting family and will expand the world of Pandora. Actor Sam Worthington told Reuters, ‘The Way of Water’ shows his character, Jake Sully, and Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri as parents working to shield their family from harm.
“This love story has evolved,” Worthington said. “We now have a family and to be honest, to me, the movie is about protecting your family.”
“Whether that’s an immediate family, it works on many levels. It could be a communal family, the family that we choose,” he said.
Worthington also mentioned that ‘The Way of Water’ will feel familiar to fans but “it’s not a rehash of the same story.”
