Avail PLI benefits: Commerce minister Piyush Goyal to industry
At an investors’ roundtable organised by DPIIT and industry body Ficci on Thursday, Goyal said electronics companies could help the country create jobs as well as surplus for exports. “This (PLI) is something … to encourage you to take first few steps to compete in the global market, scale your business and give you that initial push, but in the long run, no country in the world has succeeded to become a developed nation or a prosperous (one) on the back of government subsidies or clutches,” Goyal said.
The government had reopened the application window for the ₹6,238-crore PLI scheme for white goods – air-conditioners and LED lights – with an aim to accommodate more players under the scheme. As many as 61 white goods companies have been selected for the scheme, including Adani Copper Tubes, LG Electronics,
Enterprise and .
The 61 companies have set up component manufacturing plants at 111 locations in 14 states and union territories, and are generating employment, Goyal said.
“India is not a weak country. We’re not going to be looking for sops,” Goyal said, recalling the success of the LED programme which he (the then power minister) launched in January 2015 and said it boosted the LED business in the country while reducing energy consumption without a single penny spent from the exchequer.
