In Australian Open tennis at Melbourne Park today Rafael Nadal kicks off his campaign in style with a straight-sets win over Marcos Giron by 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in men’s singles.
In women’s singles, Maria Sakkari of Greece is into the second round of the Australian Open after beating Germany’s Tatjana Maria 6-4,7-6(2) on Rod Laver Arena Sakkari was nowhere near her best level, but moves into the next round and will face China’s, Qinwen Zheng. The 26-year-old admitted opening the tournament on the Grand Slam’s premier court was stressful.
World number one Djokovic was supposed to be the headline act in the night session, but the unvaccinated Serbian is not defending his title after a court threw out his bid to stay in the country.
The 34-year-old flew out of Australia yesterday, his dreams of becoming the first man to win 21 majors over. Roger Federer also this year not playing, following injury. Now, Nadal has the chance to reach the milestone. With the absence of two legends, the men’s tournament is wide open with Nadal, Zverev, US Open champion Daniil Medvedev and Greek world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas all in contention.
