How long can Australia carry Glenn Maxwell? Batsman’s run of cheap dismissals continues as pressure mounts on selectors to axe him for World Cup

  • Glenn Maxwell has continued a shocking run of form against England
  • Pressure mounts on selectors to axe ‘The Big Show’ ahead of World Cup
  •  Maxwell has scored just 16 runs off 33 balls in his last six T20 international

Glenn Maxwell continued his shocking run of form against England on Wednesday night, as pressure now mounts on selectors to drop him from the Australian team.

Just days out from the T20 World Cup England have handed the Aussies a second-straight defeat by eight runs in Canberra.

Maxwell made just eight runs from 11 balls, top-edging a shot against Sam Curran towards deep square leg during Australia’s run chase.

It continues a woeful string of low scores from the 33-year-old Victorian – who has scored just 16 runs in his last six international T20 matches.

Widely regarded as one of the most explosive batters in the world, Maxwell now has the lowest T20 international strike rate of the top-order Aussies over the last year.

Unbelievably, his eight runs last night in the nation’s capital is his best performance out of his last six games – which would raise alarm bells for selectors.

Australian cricket legend and commentator Mark Waugh admitted the all-rounder might not be a guarantee in the squad.

‘It’s a real worry for Maxwell’s form leading into this World Cup,’  he said on commentary for Fox Sports.

‘Maybe he’s not a lock in the team. (You) would have thought he would be, given the way he fields and his bowling.

‘But he’s there to bat at No. 4 primarily. (It’ll be) interesting to see what happens going forward there.’

Cricket fans online weren’t so polite, with many believing he should be axed now.

‘Glenn Maxwell is a finished player and a big fraud,’ said one Twitter user

‘Should replace Glenn Maxwell if they would like to retain the wc,’ commented another.

‘Glenn Maxwell is the most over hyped and over rated player in T20 cricket.’ said a third.

‘The Big Show’ has a couple more opportunities to find his form before the World Cup starts, with upcoming warm-up matches against India and England.

Australian skipper Aaron Finch had mixed opinions about last night’s match.

‘We were really poor in the field, pretty sloppy. David has been fantastic, his raw power has been fantastic,’ he said after the match.

‘Depends on the opposition, but (this XI) is close. Debate about one or two spots. A nice luxury to have three world-class quicks. Trying different things with bowling distribution.’

The Aussies will get their 2022 World Cup campaign underway in a match against New Zealand October 22 at the SCG.
