Australian-based Irish boxer Darragh Foley scored a shock win when his opponent  Robbie Davies Jr suffered a horror ankle injury – and tried to continue fighting.

Davies, who was competing in front of his home crowd in Liverpool England, made a great start against Foley and landed a good right hand in the first round.

His fortunes changed in the second however when his southpaw opponent landed a right hook which dropped Davies and injured his ankle in the process.

Davies got to his feet and made it to the end of the round, but was clearly compromised in the third round and was dropped for a second time in the bout.

This time, the English fighter’s ankle completely buckled after pressure from Foley and the fight was called off.

The gruesome injury had fight fans commenting on social media immediately.

‘Tell you what. Robbie Davies Jr is one hard motherf*****. To stand up after that ankle injury almost instantly takes serious cajones,’ said one twitter user.

That’s a nasty one for Robbie Davies Jr. What a horrible one for him. How the f*** did he get back up?! Grimaced a bit at that one,’ commented a second.

‘Gutted for Robbie Davies Jr there. Some pain threshold though, seemed more gutted about not being able carry on than his ankle snapping,’ said a third.

Davies, who has lost three of his last seven, is 33 and will be hoping the injury isn’t career ending.

Foley, who was a late call up due to a serious injury to Aussie fighter Liam Paro, said in the ring afterwards: ‘Looking back at the replay, I look like a twat jumping up and down when the man has injured himself.’

‘But I needed to win this fight. There was no way I was leaving that ring a loser, no way in my life, man.’

The shock win on Sunday extends Foley’s current winning streak to five.
