Aussie trans golfer gets death threats after title win – as Olympic swimmer accuses her of cheating

A trans golfer has revealed she received a number of death threats online after winning the Australian Women’s Classic title.

Breanna Gill, 42, lifted the trophy after winning a playoff at the prestigious Bonville course on the NSW north coast on April 2.

Her elation soon turned to despair after receiving dozens of abusive anti-trans messages – including death threats – across her social media accounts, which she later shut down due to safety fears.

Gill has played professionally across women’s tournaments for eight years – and her triumph on the greens at Bonville was her maiden title win on the professional circuit.

WPGA Tour of Australasia chief Karen Lunn was elated for Gill.

Gill’s mood soon soured when she received a number of death threats via social media – and former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies (pictured) later accused her of cheating on Twitter

Davies – a noted anti-trans campaigner – tweeted Gill was ‘stealing women’s prizemoney’

Gill did have some support on social media, with this fan labelling the ‘transphobic pile on very sad’

‘It’s the biggest win of her life. It’s really sad she can’t celebrate that win,’ she said following the online backlash.

‘Everyone is worried about her welfare…it’s obviously a very tough time.’

A tweet from the WGPA toasting Gill’s win was also later deleted. 

The WPGA has welcomed transgender players since 2004, a policy adopted by all seven of the major international women’s golf tours, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The policy requires athletes to have successfully undergone gender reassignment surgery, undertaken hormonal therapy for at least 12 months and also provide legal documents recognising their new gender.

Former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies – a noted anti-trans campaigner – later tweeted her belief that Gill was cheating.

‘This is cheating when you are allowing someone with a known male physical advantage to steal females prizes and prizemoney that should be theirs!

‘It is sex discrimination and shameful inequality in sport, a physical activity.’
