Aussie allrounder Ellyse Perry at the centre of BIZARRE incident in WBBL opening match

Aussie allrounder Ellyse Perry at the centre of BIZARRE incident in Women’s Big Bash when her regulation catch was not given out – and here’s the weird explanation why

Veteran Aussie allrounder Ellyse Perry has found herself at the heart of a bizarre incident in the opening match of the Women’s Big Bash League, when her regulation catch was initially given not out.

Perry’s Sydney Sixers were behind the over rate in their match against Brisbane Heat in Mackay, and were instructed to speed up by the umpires.

So when Perry took a regulation catch at cover to dismiss Mikayla Hinkley late in the Brisbane innings, rather than celebrating the dismissal, she simply tossed the ball back to the bowler to keep things moving.

The lack of celebrations meant a confused Hinkley stood her ground instead of walking off, and the umpire was consequently not sure if Perry had spilt the catch so she called for a video review.

The review wasted much more time than a brief celebration would have, but ultimately the right call was made and Hinkley was given out.

Scott Bailey of AAP tweeted: ‘Cricket is the dumbest sport sometimes. Sixers don’t celebrate a clear catch because they are running behind on overs. Umpires don’t give it out because no appeal. Confusion ensures. Time wasted. Randomly referred upstairs. More time wasted. Finally given out.’

Sixers captain Alyssa Healy said there actually was a muted appeal, and said the confusion was rather caused by the umpire being unable to judge if the catch was held.

‘She was unsighted when ‘Pez’ rolled, so she wasn’t sure she claimed it,’ Healy said. ‘But we made sure we appeal, just in case.’

Aside from that peculiar incident, Perry enjoyed a good game and reminded national cricket selectors she still has plenty of value.

Perry become the only player in the history of the WBBL to make more than 50 with the bat and take two or more wickets six times as she ripped through the Brisbane batting lineup.

Out of favour with the national team at present, Perry took 2-27 from her four overs with the ball and 55 from 48 balls in the Sixers’ thrilling final-over victory in Mackay.
