On Wednesday evening, an intimate group of 30 gathered at Author, interior designer, and well-known tastemaker Athena Calderone’s private residence in Brooklyn for a festive dinner she hosted with Mytheresa in celebration of friends and fashion ahead of Thanksgiving. As guests stepped out of cars onto the tree-lined Brooklyn street, they could spot a warm glow of light and the occasional camera flash emanating from Calderone’s windows, beckoning guests inside.
Coats were swiftly removed from shoulders and specialty drinks were placed in hands upon arrival. Unsurprisingly, the scene was expertly decorated. The florals were dark and moody, the staircase was lined with twiggy autumnal frondescence, and orange-leaved trees stood seemingly on their own in corners of the room. Impressive cheese boards took up real estate on the kitchen island with grapes spilling over bowls, pomegranate halves exposing their deep-hued seeds, and sprigs of herbs and candles complimenting the cheeses. The spread provided just as much ambiance as the nearby florals.
Most guests dressed for the occasion in cocktail attire. But the cozy, flattering light, and elegant decor enveloped anyone underdressed— everyone looked perfect. Guests included Jenna Lyons, Nate Berkus, Sophia Rowe, and Ignacio Mattos.
And at some point, vocalist and songwriter Zsela descended the stairs, commanding everyone’s attention before even beginning her performance in a sleek, silver Peter Do gown. Guests circled around Zsela as she started a welcome performance with her contralto, otherworldly voice. As Zsela closed her set, joking, “okay, I have one more. Then, party time.” The group laughed in unison.
Guests were eager to continue the evening as they were seated for dinner. To start, salads of shaved pear and celery were served while Calderone, Mytheresa’s CEO Michael Kliger, and president of North America, Heather Kaminetsky, all said a few words. “The past year and a half, we’ve all been in these silhoues, and that’s not how creativity is done. It’s about the people that you surround yourself with,” said Calderone, reminding the many creatives in attendance—from artists to writers to photographers—that storytelling, irrespective of the medium, hinges on community. Kliger shared the sentiment; “it’s amazing because this is the first time I’m back in New York in two years,” he shared. “It’s so beautiful to travel around the world and meet similarly minded people with completely different backgrounds, with completely different beliefs. I think this is something we may now cherish more than before.”
As family-style platters of dukkah crusted lamb chops, black sea bass, and grilled cauliflower steaks and stewed broad beans were placed throughout the table, guests turned to their neighbors to reconnect or connect for the first time. The shared plates made the dinner feel like a holiday celebration indeed—those who had just met served each other as conversation flowed far past the confines of small talk. It was as if the celebration was indeed a family affair, with everyone reuniting for the holidays.
