Aston Villa duo Matty Cash and Lucas Digne struck by BOTTLES thrown by Everton fans

Aston Villa duo Matty Cash and Lucas Digne were felled by bottles thrown by Everton fans in disgraceful scenes at Goodison Park.

Steven Gerrard’s side were celebrating their breakthrough goal by Emiliano Buendia on the cusp of half-time in front of one of the home stands.

Cash appeared to be struck on the head by a bottle full of orange liquid and it appeared the same missile also hit former Everton defender Digne, who fell to the turf too.

Both players were left clutching their heads before eventually returning to their feet.

Several other bottles were thrown from the stands in the unsavoury scenes but missed the group of Villa players. 

Security staff at Goodison were searching for the culprits during half-time and an announcement was made over the PA system asking supporters not to throw missiles onto the pitch at the start of the second-half.

The incident was condemned by Jermaine Jenas in the BT Sport studio at half-time.

He said: ‘It’s becoming too often in the Premier League now (fans throwing things). 

‘It’s disgusting if I’m totally honest, look at the state of that, we’re going back to old times and the dark ages of football with bottles and coins being thrown onto the pitch. 

‘There needs to be some serious punishments thrown out to all the clubs that are behaving in this way, it’s not just Everton Football Club, this has happened in stadiums all over the season and they need to stamp it out now. 

‘Whatever it may be, there needs to be some punishments to stop it from happening.’

Digne, who provided the assist for Buendia’s goal, only joined Villa from Everton in a £25million move nine days ago. 

It is far from the first occasion that a Premier League fixture has been marred by a bottle-throwing incident this season.

Burnley’s Matthew Lowton was struck in the face by a plastic bottle thrown by a Leeds United fan at Elland Road as they celebrated a goal earlier this month.

Manchester City players were also pelted with objects by Arsenal fans after they scored a late winner at the Emirates Stadium this month.
