Aston Villa defender Frederic Guilbert close to cancelling his contract with the club
Aston Villa defender Frederic Guilbert close to cancelling his contract with the club and finalising a move to Strasbourg… after struggling for game-time at the club under both Steven Gerrard and Unai Emery
- Frederic Guilbert will cancel his contract with Aston Villa and join Strasbourg
- The Frenchman has not played a Premier League game since the 19-20 season
- He was unhappy with his lack of game-time under two managers this season
Aston Villa defender Frederic Guilbert is set to end his nightmare stint at the club with his contract to be ripped up.
The 28-year-old has only played one game for Villa in the last three seasons, and he has been unhappy with his lack of game-time under Steven Gerrard and Unai Emery this campaign.
After his contract is cancelled, he is set to join Strasbourg who he has spent the previous two seasons playing for on loan.

He featured regularly in his first season with the club – playing in their Carabao Cup final loss to Man City – but has not played a Premier League game since Matty Cash joined the club
He has not made a Premier League appearance for Villa since the 2019/20 season after Matty Cash joined the club from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2020.
After playing once under Gerrard last season in a cup game, he never featured again.
As quoted by the Birmingham Mail, he said last month: ‘When Steven Gerrard arrived, he told me I had two weeks to prove myself but then I barely played 45 minutes.
‘I made the decision to shut up and keep working. Because, if I yelled, it wouldn’t have changed anything. And now I’m looking to the future.

‘With Unai Emery, I have never had a discussion. I can’t stay in this situation forever. We are studying the possibilities with my entourage; whether it is a loan with an option to buy or a straight transfer.
‘The only certainty is that I have to have playing time at a club to revive myself. This is the most important thing for me.’
Guilbert took to social media earlier this week to send a hint that a move may be a step closer to happening.
Posting on Twitter, the 28-year-old shared a post with a football, egg timer and praying emoji.
