Ashes 2023: MCC members, suspended over Long Room fiasco, likely to face lifetime ban – Report
The Ashes 2023 edition has already been a huge hit. The opening three Tests have produced brilliant contest as Australia lead the series 2-1 with the fourth and penultimate Test to begin on July 19 at Old Trafford, Manchester. Among the three Tests held so far, the second Ashes Test at Lord’s turned a lot of eyebrows.
The fifth and final day’s play saw plenty of action and drama. It all started with Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal. The English wicketkeeper fell for 10 when he was caught wandering off the crease, off Cameron Green’s delivery, and got stumped by Alex Carey in England’s 371-run chase. The incident happened just before the lunch break as England were on the back foot in the final innings.
As the players from both the camps entered the Long Room, the Aussies were targetted by the MCC members. Some of them hurled abuse towards the Australian players and things went out of hand when Usman Khawaja revealed that he was racially abused. Thus, swift action was taken and the MCC members involved in abusing Khawaja got suspended with immediate effect.
Now, according to Sydney Morning Herald, a detailed report of the Australian security manager will be taken into account along with the testimonies of all the other eye-witnesses and it may lead to the lifetime ban on the MCC members.
SMH quoted a member as saying, “Identify and kick them out. There are lots of members who would never do that and lots waiting in the wings to take their spots if they won’t appreciate them.”
“It’s literally written in the rules that you can’t do that. Don’t abuse players and in particular don’t pick out the bloke who of all the Aussie team seems the nicest one and hasn’t done anything ever to upset anyone,” the member added.
The fourth and penultimate Ashes Test will commence on July 19 at Old Trafford, Manchester. Ben Stokes & Co. will aim to level the series 2-2 with the final match at The Oval, London on July 27.
