Artificial intelligence writes Phil Gould’s traditional Origin pre-game rev-up speech as fans call for ‘Gus’ to return – and it’s hard to tell it apart from the real thing
Phil Gould may no longer deliver the iconic final words before each State of Origin game, but a creative rugby league pundit has found a perfect solution.
The sight of Gould walking towards the camera to issue a last rallying cry before the action of the pitch begins has been a quintessential feature of Origin footy.
The New South Wales legend no longer performs the ritual, but Triple M’s pundit Elliott Lovejoy has replaced him with artificial intelligence.
Lovejoy shared his creation on Twitter, super-imposing his face on footage of Gould delivering one of his iconic pre-match speeches.
And it’s hard to tell his creation apart from Gould himself, such is the emphasis with which the lines are delivered.

But Triple M’s Elliott Lovejoy has come up with a brilliant solution
‘In this arena of gladiators, the battle will be fierce. The hits bone-crushing and the stakes higher than ever,’ Lovejoy says.
‘Let the roar of the crowd fuel your every move. […] Look to your left, look to your right and see the unwavering resolve in the eyes of your teammates.
‘Tonight, as you step on that hallow field, remember the sacrifices you have made to be here. Tonight we march into battle with the spirit of legends in our hearts.
‘We carry the hopes and dreams of an entire state on our shoulders.’
Gould revealed last week the days of him delivering the final words before kick-off were ‘long gone’, much to the disappointment of several fans.
A fan said it was ‘a tragedy’ the rugby league great would no longer perform his rousing speech, while another added: ‘We need it mate. Such a good rev up – coming from a Queenslander.’
Another added: ‘So sad, the final word was an awesome build up to kick off and added to the anticipation.’
While Gould no longer delivers his final word, he is part of the Channel Nine commentary team for the series in 2023.

The decision left many fans disappointed as Gould’s speeches are part of Origin folklore
Even Queensland fans asked the New South Wales legend to come back
Earlier this week, Gould slammed the new women’s Origin format, insisting there should be a decider if the two-game series ended all square.
‘I’ll be campaigning for a decider, don’t worry girls I’ll get you a decider,’ he said on Nine.
‘I’ll find a ground for them, come and play at Belmore if you like, I’ll put it on.
‘There’ll be a decider if it’s 1-1, we’ll get a game on somewhere.’
