Arsenal full-back Kieran Tierney has been ruled out of action for the remainder of the season after sustaining a knee injury while away on international duty with Scotland.

The 24-year-old felt discomfort in his left knee after completing a training session with the Gunners on Thursday, March 31. As a result, he was ruled out of Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. 

Tierney underwent a ‘specialist consultation’ on Tuesday morning and the club’s medical team decided it would be within his best interest to undergo surgery.

Arsenal have since confirmed that the procedure will take place in ‘London in the forthcoming days’ and that his rehabilitation programme will start ‘immediately after.’ 

The club have not put a timescale on his recovery, but they have said that ‘everyone at the club will now be supporting and working hard with him to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.’

The Gunners released a statement on their official website saying: ‘Kieran felt discomfort after a training session on Thursday, March 31. Further assessments and scans have confirmed that Kieran has damaged his left knee.

‘A specialist consultation took place on Tuesday, and as a result of further discussions with Kieran and our medical team, it has been decided that Kieran requires surgery to his knee. This procedure will take place in London in the forthcoming days.

‘Kieran’s rehabilitation programme will start immediately after his surgery, at which stage a clearer understanding will be established on his recovery timescale. However, it is likely that Kieran will now miss the remainder of this season.

‘Everyone at the club will now be supporting and working hard with Kieran to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.’

The news will come as a blow to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta – who is pushing for Champions League qualification this season. 

While Tierney’s absences will also cause major concern for Scotland who, as things stand, are due to face Ukraine in a World Cup qualifying play-off in June. 

Nathan Patterson is also at risk of missing Scotland’s World Cup qualifier after Everton manager Frank Lampard confessed the 20-year-old’s season is ‘possibly’ over after a training-ground injury that requires surgery.
