Arijit Singh’s Kolkata concert cancelled? Political row kicks up social media storm – Times of India

The cancellation of Arijit Singh’s much-awaited Kolkata concert at Eco Park has kicked up a social media storm and a fresh political controversy throughout West Bengal. The live performance was scheduled to take place on February 18. However, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has alleged that the show has been cancelled because Arijit sang the popular Bollywood song ‘Gerua’ at the opening ceremony of Kolkata International Film Festival in front of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

As per BJP leader Dr. Indranil Khan’s latest tweet, the versatile singer had to pay the price for singing the hit song ‘Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua’ dedicating it to Shah Rukh Khan at KIFF opening while Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was on stage.

Dr. Indranil Khan tweeted, “Why has Arijit Singh’s show at Eco Park been cancelled by WB Govt body HIDCO? The result of Arijit humming “Rang de tu mohe Gerua” in front of Her Excellency at KIFF? Intolerance scales new heights.”

Meanwhile, Kolkata’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Urban Development, Mayor Firhad Hakim, has slammed the claims and denied any political intervention. According to Hakim, the Chairman of HIDCO, no official application has been submitted to HIDCO by the show’s organisers.

He said that the organisers have only contacted the local police verbally. The show was supposed to be held during the New Year’s celebrations but at that time a large crowd visits Eco Park. Also, the timing of the concert coincides with the much important G20 summit. That’s why the police requested the organisers to move the show to another venue and there is no political motive.

Meanwhile, the Ecopark administrators have reportedly revealed that the venue had witnessed severe damage previously after hosting large-scale events.

While uncertainty looms over Arijit’s concert fans are anxiously waiting for confirmation because of the frenzy surrounding the live show. Even the ticket prices became sky high in last few months. The current ticket prices for the music concert, to be held at Eco Park, starts from Rs 2,500 onwards but what has left everyone in shock is the price of the tickets that are near the main stage.

While 2,500 is for a bronze ticket, 4,000 is for Silver, 8,000 for gold, 10, 500 for platinum, and the last one, 75,000 for the Dimond lounge. The bronze section will be the one that will be farthest from the stage and the diamond lounge is just near the stage where Arijit will perform in February. Interestingly, last week the Dimond lounge ticket price was 50,000. So, you can imagine the madness surrounding the concert.
