JOHANNESBURG – After six years in the making, the Sibikwa Arts Centre, in collaboration with the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and Théâtre du Soleil, will finally bring 1789 to life on stage in Johannesburg in 2023, with the support of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French Institute in Paris, and the City of Paris.

The play 1789, which takes its title from the year of the French Revolution, transports viewers to the streets of Paris, to a nation on the verge of a revolution, and follows a variety of citizens as they struggle against an oppressive government in the pursuit of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Experienced directors Phyllis Klotz and Bra Smal Ndaba, who founded the Sibikwa Arts Centre, have assembled an incredible ensemble cast and personnel to bring this historical masterpiece to life at the Sibikwa Arts Centre for a brief season this July.

The performance first opens to the public on Bastille Day, 14 July, which is a day of remembrance in France.

Joel Zuma, Mlindeli Zondi, Nomsa Mbatha, Khanyisile Ngwabe, Siphiwe Nkabinde, Snenhlanhla Mgeyi, Masiza Mbali, and Zevangeli Mamppofu are among the exceptional cast members, who promise to give incredible performances that will leave you speechless.
