Ariana Grande Just Went an Unexpected Shade of Blonde

When the autumn and winter months hit, most people tend to change their hair color in line with the seasonal mood. The weather gets colder and darker, and Halloween rolls around, prompting us—consciously or not—to switch from lighter shades to those darker, more vampy choices. In other words, it’s not the obvious time to go blonde.

Regardless, that’s exactly what Ariana Grande did this week, swapping her trademark chestnut brown for a champagne bronde (that’s brunette meets blonde), which she showed off in a new Instagram post cheekily captioned “new earrings”. In true Ariana fashion, her signature high ponytail was firmly in place.

The new color is likely to be linked to her role in the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked the musical, in which Grande will star as Glinda the Good Witch. She is currently filming in London, and the glossy new shade comes courtesy of colorist Francesco de Chiara, who works at the Nicola Clarke at John Frieda Salon.

Perfectly suited to her skin tone, Grande’s bronde looks effortless—but color transformations like these are notoriously tricky, predominantly because bleach “lifts up the outer protective layer of each strand so the bleach can get in and pull the natural color pigments out”, as Alex Brownsell, colorist and co-founder of Bleach London, previously told Vogue. Many colorists use professional bond-building formulas, such as Olaplex, to assist and help keep the hair strong and robust throughout the chemical process.
