We asked Rahman to recall the early days when he first collaborated with KK. He revealed, “KK was singing for jingles and then we called him for Sapney (Tamil film Minsara Kanavu), and he sang Strawberry Kannae. This was in the 90s and then he went on to sing for Ismail Darbaar in Tadap Tadap. Unfortunately, I had called him for a song just six months back. He was not well at that time, so I told him to get well and come back. I never knew we would lose him and I would not be able to work with him again.”
A lot has been spoken and written about the adverse conditions at the back to back concerts in Kolkata which took a toll on KK. We asked AR Rahman of he too thought that the stress of love performances got to KK. He said, “I haven’t seen what happened, but it’s never easy for an artiste to perform on a live stage.”
Rahman did start his career down South and then made a successful foray to Hindi and international cinema. We asked for his views on the growing popularity of South films and he said, “South cinema is doing well and it’s great. Every cinema is feeding families and it’s great that their fresh ideas are working, because the same old gets boring, it’s good to have some variety.”
Finally, we also spoke to him about detractors saying that Hindi cinema is unable to keep pace with South movies. Reacting to this subject, he said, “There’s nothing wrong with Hindi cinema. The comparisons are just a part of mass psychology. This is just a phase.”
