Apple Watch OS, Chrome browser vulnerable: CERT – Times of India

NEW DELHI: At a time when the government stays on high alert over growing cases of cyberattacks on critical installations and citizen data, the country’s top cyber security agency CERT-In on Friday warned of “multiple vulnerabilities” in Apple’s operating system for watch and TV, and on the desktop version of Google‘s Chrome browser.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) said the vulnerabilities could allow hackers and unlawful elements to gain illegal access to sensitive data and user info.
The agency, which tracks hacking activities and cyberattacks and frauds, advised that users who are vulnerable should update the software on the products to stay protected against attackers.
“Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Apple products which could allow an attacker to bypass privacy preferences… gain access to sensitive data, and spoof user interface on the targeted system,” CERT-In said.
Regarding threats to Google Chrome’s desktop version, CERT-In warned vulnerabilities could be “exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service condition”. “An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a victim to visit a specially crafted website.”
The advisories come at a time when the government remains on high alert over protection of sensitive data as cases of cyberattacks as well as ransomware are on the rise. Recently, the servers at the country’s top medical institute AIIMS came under a cyberattack, which impacted the hospital’s patient management system. It is believed that many of the attacks are the handiwork of cyberattackers from China.
To protect vital institutes, power grids, and even the financial system, the government has also come out with a standard operating protocol for its staff such as those working in ministries and public sector units. This includes signing out of emails at close of day, updating passwords, and switching off computers. Such is the scare around cyberattacks that the government has warned its employees of disciplinary action if the protocols and SOPs are not adhered to.
