Apple may launch two new MacBook Airs this summer – Times of India
Apple kicked off the year with two-new MacBook Pros, but there are a few more MacBooks in the store for this year, two MacBook Air models — a 13-inch and a larger 15-inch. At least one might jump on to the next generation of Apple Silicon — the M3 chip.
In his weekly newsletter, Power On, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says that Apple plans to bring three new Macs this year, two of which could be MacBook Airs. Out of these two models — one will be the successor to the 13-inch model, and the other will be the first-ever larger 15-inch model, which has been in the rumour mill for a while.
The 13-inch MacBook Air, codenamed J513, will be the follow-up to the last year’s MacBook Air, which was parted away from the old wedge-shaped design of the Air for a much more similar design to the newer MacBook Pros.
Then, there could also be a larger 15-inch MacBook Air, a first-ever. Gurman previously referred to the 15-inch MacBook Air as a “wider version of the 13.6-inch MacBook Air.” As for what will be inside, not much is known as of now.
What’d be inside the new MacBook Air models
“The chip destined for the new MacBook Air models is slightly less clear,” says Gurman. While it is not sure what chips the new MacBook Air models will come with, Gurman expects that the 13-inch MacBook Air could upgrade to the next-generation M3 chip while the 15-inch model could stick with the M2 chip.
It has been almost a year since the last MacBook Air, which had a design refresh and got the new M2 chip. So, introducing a new one with the same chip this year would not make much sense. So, it is “plausible” that the upcoming 13-inch MacBook Air could come with the M3 chip.
The M3 chip is said to be built on the 3nm process node of TSMC. Further, Gurman suggests that the chip will bring a “major boost” to performance and efficiency.
As for the 15-inch Macbook Air, it is expected to come with the M2 chip. Rumours have it that the 15-inch model could come with the M2 or M2 Pro chip. Well, it could be exciting, being a thin and light larger machine, but at the same time, a year-old chip could reduce its shelf life, as the M3 would come soon.
Last year, the MacBook Air debuted at the WWDC in July, which also kicked off the transition to M2 chips. The chances are that the new 13-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip could debut around the same time this year. As for the 15-inch one, it is speculated to arrive a little early in April.
