apple headset: Apple’s AR/VR headset may come with as many as 14 cameras – Times of India

Apple’s upcoming AR/VR headset may come with a total of 14 cameras that will enable lifelike avatars of the user, as per a report by The Information. Each of these cameras will reportedly track the user’s face to project the correct facial expressions and mouth movements in the AI avatars.
The report also said that ex-Apple design chief Jony Ive has remained involved with the headset projekt in the role of the external consultant and that he is more inclined towards a headset design in which the user has to wear a battery connected to the headset, like that of Magic Leap’s headset design. However, the report also adds that “it couldn’t be learned if this approach will make it into the final design.”
“One person familiar with the matter said Ive’s consulting work for Apple since he left includes the headset, adding that he is often brought in to help his former team push through their preferences in areas such as battery, camera placement and ergonomics over those of engineers. Two people said even after Ive left Apple, some employees on the headset project were still required to make the trek from Cupertino to San Francisco, where Ive has a home, to get his approval on changes.”, adds the report.
The report further said that Apple is not focussing the headset towards gaming and could use “hand tracking or in combination with a clothespin-like finger clip as inputs for the device”.
Apple’s AR/VR headset is expected to come out in 2023.
