Anurag Kashyap opens up on the lack of unity in the Hindi film industry; recalls he was asked to ‘shut up’ when he stood up for someone – Exclusive – Times of India

Anurag Kashyap is out and about promoting his upcoming film ‘Dobaaraa’ that stars Taapsee Pannu in the lead role. The mystery drama is an official remake of a Spanish film ‘Mirage’ and Anurag and Taapsee spoke at length about their film and more in a free-wheeling chat with ETimes.

Speaking about the ‘cancel culture’ affecting Aamir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Raksha Bandhan’, filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt had recently told ETimes about the lack of unity in the Hindi film industry being responsible for the current situation. Agreeing with the filmmaker, Kashayp said, “Our industry is like that. I have faced a lot of it.”

He recalled an incident when he supported a peer and was asked to stay away instead. “This one time I stood in support of someone else, and I was told it’s not my fight, my place to talk and that I should shut up,” he said.

Anurag also reacted to Ranveer Singh’s nude photoshoot that caused a huge stir recently. “He not only broke the internet, he broke my self confidence. How will I get it back?” he joked.

When pointed out that women get a different reaction when they attempt something similar, both Taapsee and Anurag agreed, “We are a patriarchal society.”

“The world has become patriarchal, not just Indian society. We as a society, as a culture, associate the honour of everything with a woman’s vagina. That is the root cause of the problem. We thought there was a time when things were changing and there will be a change, and things were being progressive. Now it’s all gone,” Anurag added.
