On the chat show, Kimmel called Renner the “toughest Avenger.”
“Was this a publicity stunt?” Kimmel jokingly asked Renner who replied, “Absolutely.”
Kimmel then added, “Now if there was any question as to who the toughest Avenger was, that’s settled now. Forget [Chris] Hemsworth, forget these guys, it’s you, you’re the guy.”
Renner’s appearance on the show comes after his sit-down interview with Diane Sawyer, where the star opened up about his recovery efforts following the near-fatal snowplow accident back in January.
Renner received “blunt chest trauma, orthopaedic injuries” and broke over 30 bones in the accident that left him close to death.
The star shared that he was driving the plow after using it to pull one of the family’s trucks out of the snow and onto the pavement. As the plow started to skid on ice, Renner said he became worried about the safety of his nephew, Alex, who had just unhooked the chains connecting the truck and the plow. Renner stuck one foot out of the plow to look back at Alex and did not set the parking brake. He then lost his footing and fell out of the plow’s cab.
“You shouldn’t be outside the vehicle when you’re operating it, you know what I mean? It’s like driving a car with one foot out of the car,” Renner, seated in a wheelchair, told ABC News journalist Diane Sawyer.
“But it is what it was,” he added. “And it’s my mistake, and I paid for it.”
“I feel bad that my actions caused so much pain.”
The actor was shown walking with the aid of a walker. He is still undergoing hours of daily therapy for his injuries. Renner credited the support of his family with helping him survive the accident.
“I’ve been refilled and refuelled with love and titanium,” he said with a laugh.
Renner will soon be seen on-screen in the four-part series ‘Rennervations’ that debuts on Wednesday. The two-time Oscar nominee, who plays Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will repurpose, and refurbish vehicles, to assist local communities. Examples include making a water treatment facility out of a delivery truck and transforming a tour bus into a mobile music studio. He’s assisted by celebrity friends including fellow Marvel star Anthony Mackie, ‘Mission Impossible’ co-star Anil Kapoor and Vanessa Hudgens.
