Anger against Sri Lankan President, PM spills over on social media
On Tuesday, while many local television visuals showed anti-government protesters shouting slogans for the president to resign and also rebuilding tents of protesters, many groups posted visuals of vehicles of Sri Lanka’s governing party supporters in a lake after being pushed into the water during a clash between pro- and anti-government demonstrators near the prime minister’s official residence in Colombo and commended the action.
Many Facebook groups, including Gotabaya go home, Gotagogama, OccupyGalleface and GoHomeGotabaya2022 with taglines such as “We need to liberate our motherland from Gotabaya and Rajapaksha family” saw heightend activity since Tuesday, with mostly messages such as “A new dawn of peace and change is near,” “Individually, we are one drop, but together, we are an ocean,” and “Success comes after many protests.”A group “Sri Lanka Pictures with context” that has over a lakh subscribers asked protesters to stay united and not shed tears when they “burn vehicles” as it could be a “ploy” to extract sympathy and dilute the resistance. “We got here because of rulers like them. The hardest part is to stay alert,’ a message said.
A Facebook user Malaka Palliyaguruge asked protesters to not get violent else “the enemy will get that advantage.”
