Ange: I won’t be pushed

Ange Postecoglou won’t give up on the Scottish title despite another disappointing result for his Celtic team.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is refusing to surrender to his critics after another disappointing result for the Hoops.

Postecoglou’s men were held to a 1-1 weekend home draw by Dundee United. It’s a result that has left Celtic in sixth spot on the Scottish Premiership ladder and six points behind leaders and arch-rivals Rangers.

But the former Socceroos coach isn’t panicking in the face of criticism of his methods.

“I know people are wanting to push me on some kind of edge of the ledge somewhere – it’s just not going to happen,” Postecoglou told reporters after the draw.

“I don’t worry about those things. I look at how my team is playing and what we are trying to create.

“I know it frustrates people because I know what they want me to say.

“I know what the club is about, I know what the expectations are. I believe the road we have started on will get us there so we will just keep going.”

Postecoglou also described the Scottish league as “weird” in that critics had already written off Celtic’s hopes of regaining the title they lost to Rangers last season.

“You call things early here, don’t you? It’s quite remarkable that seven games in people are calling the title already,” he said.

“It’s just not how I work. I’m not pulling up stumps after seven games just because other people seem to think there is some sort of insurmountable challenge out there for us.

“If we weren’t playing well, if we were struggling through things, then by all means I would be looking at things a lot differently.

“With the efforts we are putting in at the moment, and the football we are playing, and the chances we are creating, and what we have got to come back into the team, I just see it totally differently.”

The Hoops have a host of players sidelined, including captain Callum McGregor, and attacking trio Kyogo Furuhashi, Giorgos Giakoumakis and James Forrest, while Josip Juranovic and James McCarthy were forced off in the draw with Dundee United.

Celtic led 1-0 via a 16th minute goal from Liel Abada, but United equalised two minutes later through Ian Harkes.

The Hoops return to action on Friday morning when they host German club in a Europa League Group G clash Bayer Leverkusen.

“It won’t be hard motivating the players, sometimes as a manager you’ve got to take the responsibility of the result away from the players, because the players gave everything (against Dundee United),” Postecoglou said.
