Anees Bazmee: Feroz Khan made even the simplest characters look larger than life – Times of India

Several filmmakers and actors have had their own interpretation of terms like suave, fashionable, and modern. Actor-filmmaker Feroz Khan gave the terms a spin that became his signature on screen. It didn’t matter what he played on screen – he made it all look trendy, modern, and coveted. His enigmatic presence on screen charmed the audience for decades before he called it a day. In what became his last film appearance, Feroz Khan played a stylish don in Anees Bazmee’s 2007 comedy, Welcome, starring Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, and Nana Patekar in central characters. The filmmaker makes it a point to pay homage to the senior star on his birth anniversary every year.
Anees, who has also worked with Fardeen Khan, Feroz Khan’s son, says, “Oh! I can never forget the enigmatic personality he had. He was a charmer and such a good-hearted man. I used to sit with him for long hours when we were working on Welcome. He shot a big chunk of his role in Dubai. We would sit together every evening and talk about films and the yesteryears and so on. I have seen so many of his films, especially Dharmatma and Apraadh. He introduced such a modern approach and style to filmmaking. He lent it a completely different avatar. I had a great rapport with him. He would love to talk about the cinema that influenced him. I had worked with Fardeen in No Entry and he had loved that movie. He had called me home and we had a great time talking. That was where we started bonding. I found myself drawn to the person he is. It had been years since he had stopped working, maybe he knew about his health condition and he didn’t want to jeopardise anyone’s film. But I insisted on having him on board and he relented. It turned out to be the last film he shot. The role became larger than life because of him. Feroz Khan made even the simplest characters look larger than life. Anil and Nana were so happy to work with him. Khan saab used to love me. For years when I would watch his films, I would wonder what someone could possibly offer a man of his stature; what kind of a character can do justice to his time and effort. I thankfully found something that eventually became memorable because of him. After he returned from his shoot in Dubai, he would ring me up every day and ask me about everyone in the team – the actors and the technicians. He would recall everyone by their first names. Professionals and artistes like him can spoil you for life.”
