Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp keeps adding new features to improve the user experience. The company is reportedly beta testing a new feature. WhatsApp recently rolled out an update through the Google Play Beta Program.
The update has revealed that the company is working on a new call-related feature named audio chats for its Android app. This feature is expected to arrive with a later update.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, the upcoming audio chats feature will be available within conversations and is expected to be rolled out with an update of the app in the coming days.
WhatsApp audio chat feature: How it may work
WhatsApp hasn’t officially confirmed when this feature will be rolled out or how it will work. However, the report includes screenshots which explains how this upcoming WhatsApp feature may work on Android devices.
Once this feature is rolled out, a new waveforms icon will be added to the chat header. This will allows users to initiate audio chats. As per the screenshots, WhatsApp will show a red button for ending ongoing calls.
Some additional space will also be available near the button which is expected to be used by the waveform icon. This icon will imply the capability of real-time audio visualisation.

This UI design will offer a minimalistic interface that will allow users to view audio waveforms while navigating between their conversations. The feature is still under development. Only Android beta testers can currently try out the feature.
WhatsApp recently announced a new desktop app for Windows users. This new app aims to improve the calling ability on the Windows version of the app. WhatsApp users on Windows can now place group video calls with up to 8 people and audio calls with up to 32 people. Now, the company is reportedly working on new call-related feature.
