Andhra Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy meets PM Modi, raises Polavaram project issue

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his New Delhi residence on Monday. He raised many key issues related to the State including the Polavaram project, compensating resource gap funds, rationality in coverage of beneficiaries under National Food Security Act, arrears from Telangana Discoms to the State, and Special Category Status among others, ET has learnt.

This is Reddy’s second meeting with the prime minister in three months.

According to an official statement by the CMO, during the interaction, the Chief Minister requested the Prime Minister to help in completing the construction of the Polavaram project at the earliest and urged him to approve the revised cost estimates of Rs 55,548.87 crore as the Technical Advisory Committee had already approved.

Also, Reddy is said to have requested the Prime Minister to expedite the approval of the revised cost estimate of the project. During his half-an-hour meeting with the Prime Minister, the CM sought early approval of a higher cost estimate of the project, from the original estimated cost of Rs 35,000 crore, as the state government is finding it difficult to take up the rehabilitation and resettlement works due to the project’s high cost, sources said. Polavaram is a multi-purpose irrigation project which is under construction.

Party MP Vijayasai Reddy told ET that the meeting with the PM went well, and a number of issues concerning the State were raised by the CM. “In fact, on the 25th August there will be a meeting with top officials in the centre with our delegation and the discussion of the matters will be taken forward.”

The CM, ET has learnt has also asked the Prime Minister to release funds of Rs 32,625 crore under Resource Gap Fund for various pending bills under 10th Pay Commission, including social security pensions and others during the period 2014-15. A special class status, he has said, will boost the growth in the industrial sector, job creation and tax concessions, thereby reducing the burden on the State. The CM has also asked for approvals for setting up another 12 Medical Colleges in the state, an Integrated Steel Plant in the YSR district, and approvals to allot beach sand minerals to Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation which could attract investments of Rs 20,000 crore.
