Anderlecht 0-1 West Ham: Super-sub Gianluca Scamacca’s strike enough for the Hammers to extend lead in Europa League Conference group with hard-fought victory in Belgium
- West Ham narrowly beat Anderlecht after entertaining game in Belgium
- Gianluca Scamacca broke the deadlock in the 79th minute with a great finish
- Alphonse Areola made a late save to deny Wolves on loan striker Fabio Silva
- Silkeborg beat FCSB in other group game as Hammers top group by five points
West Ham extended their lead in their Europa Conference League group as Gianluca Scamacca’s goal was enough to earn them the victory over Anderlecht at the Lotto Park.
Both sides were pushing for the win but clear-cut chances were far and few between them as both Alphonse Areola and Hendrik Van Crombrugge were not seriously tested. However in the 39th minute, Said Benrahma wasted the best chance of the first half after he blazed over from close range following some great work from Jarrod Bowen.
On loan Wolves striker Fabio Silva was Anderlecht’s biggest threat going forward but was struggling to find the target with his shots. But it was the Hammer’s substitutes that made the breakthrough as Scamacca fired a low shot past Van Crombrugge in the 79th minute.
Anderlecht went close to an equaliser soon after but Silva was denied by Areola, as the French keeper made a stunning save to preserve the Hammers lead.
