Anandji of Kalyanji-Anandji turns 90, looking back at the duo’s best songs – Times of India
Feroz was among the many topnotch producers/directors of the 1970s and 80s who swore by the K-A brand. The duo composed chartbusters for Feroz from his first directorial Apradh to last Yalgaar, their biggest collaborative triumph being Qurbani in which Kalyanji’s son the super-talented Viju Shah also played a huge part.
Other movie moghuls who favoured K-A included Prakash Mehra in whose debut film Haseena Maan Jayegi, K-A imparted hits like Bekhudi Mein Sanam and Chale The Saath Milkar. But it was K-A almost all the way for Mehra with Zanjeer, Haath Ki Safaai, Lawaaris and of course the piece de resistance Muqaddar Ka Sikandar which is one of the all-time musical soundtracks of Indian cinema. K-A lost Prakash Mehra to Bappi Lahiri in his later films.
Another filmmaking stalwart Manoj Kumar extracted excellent songs from K-A in his directorial debut Upkar followed by Purab Aur Paschim. These contain timeless songs like Kasme Vaade Pyar Wafaa, Hai Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sadaa, Dulhan Chali, Koi Jab Tumhara Hriday Tod De. However with Shor Manoj Kumar switched to the more saleable Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
After Sachin Dev Burman in Guide and Jewel Thief, Vijay Anand switched to K-A in Johnny Mera Naam, for blockbuster tunes like Pal Bhar Ke Liye Koi Hamein Pyar Kar Le, Babul Pyare and Oh Mere Raja. Vijay Anand’s Blackmail, though a flop, contained the all-time KA-Kishore Kumar classic Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas.
