Amid political turmoil in Jharkhand, CM Soren is on announcement spree

Amid political turmoil and uncertainty in the state, Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren is on an announcement spree. For the past one week, Soren has made some big announcements which were either part of his party’s election manifesto or decisions which were long-pending.

In March, during the budget session, Soren had said that the government would soon implement the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Later, it was reported that OPS would be effective from August 15, but it was not implemented. However, Soren quickly approved the OPS effective September 2022 even as the crisis related to the office of profit case against him unfolded.

On August 26, Soren was in Netarhat where he announced withdrawal of cases against people involved in opposing the Netarhat firing range in 1965.

In a similar move, the state government also extended by a year the service of the assistant police force employed by the previous government on a contract of five years. During this period the government will work out employability and continuity options for the assistance police force. The state government has also increased the amount given to poor and needy patients for the treatment of severe diseases from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh.

With the governor’s decision still pending in his case, Soren is trying to catch up fast with his poll promises to present it before the people of the state.

Meanwhile, the UPA MLAs came back from Raipur to Ranchi on Sunday evening to attend the special assembly session. All the MLAs were shifted to the Circuit House in Ranchi. Soren met the MLAs before the assembly session.

Sources told ET that apart from seeking a confidence vote, Soren would use this opportunity to talk about his government’s schemes and work. He would attack the BJP for destabilising his government. The issue of 27% OBC reservation may also be touched upon by JMM leaders during discussion on the vote of confidence.
