Amendment to protect Dreamers heads for floor vote in US House – Times of India
US Congresswoman Deborah Ross’s (Democrat-North Carolina) amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which will protect Documented Dreamers, has just advanced out of the US House Rules Committee and now heads to the floor for a vote.
“200,000+ young people face the risk of deportation, and this amendment will prevent them from aging out of legal immigration status,” Ross shared on Twitter on Tuesday. Documented Dreamers are dependents of long-term non-immigrant visa holders including the H-1B. This group of dependents includes thousands of Indians who face aging out of the US system when they turn 21.
Earlier in May this year, a group of 40 youth members of Improve The Dream, an organisation that represents Documented Dreamers from across the United States, had gone to the US Capitol in Washington DC to meet with House representatives and advocate for their cause.
There are eight amendments to bring relief to immigrants to the NDAA, which is currently being debated in the US House and Senate, including the one by Representative Ross.
Another amendment that has come up in the US Congress, will make the pathway to getting green cards easier for immigrants with PhDs or master’s degrees in some STEM fields. It was submitted by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (Democrat-Illinois).
