All the Stars Came Out for Valentino’s Couture Spectacular in Rome
On Friday, the fall 2022 couture season ended with a bang courtesy of Valentino—although not where you might expect. Instead of its usual appearance on the schedule in Paris, the brand returned to its spiritual hometown of Rome (Valentino Garavani first launched the brand there in 1960 with a small store on the Via Condotti) for a breathtaking spectacle that unfolded across the city’s iconic Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna.
Just as dazzling as the flamboyant couture confections and the shimmering makeup courtesy of Pat McGrath, however, were the celebrity arrivals who had stopped by this weekend to celebrate creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s latest couture offering. First up was Anne Hathaway, who continued the brilliantly playful style streak she’s been on lately in a Barbie-worthy fuchsia minidress (in the distinctive hue of “Pink PP” Piccioli developed for his fall 2022 collection) and a pair of vertiginous platform heels.
Then, there was the arrival of Naomi Campbell—a long-time muse to Piccioli who has regularly walked for the house during his tenure—in a white bustier top, tailored trousers, and a dramatic, billowing black taffeta cape. (Plus, a pair of sunglasses, naturally.) Hollywood royalty was represented elsewhere courtesy of Ariana DeBose and Florence Pugh, both of whom wore bold looks in Pink PP, while Andrew Garfield stepped out in slick, ’70s-inspired tailoring that included denim flares and a baby blue crepe silk shirt with a bow at the neckline left artfully undone.
