Alexander Volkanovski rates Jose Aldo as featherweight GOAT but backs himself to overhaul Brazilian

Alexander Volkanovski rates Jose Aldo as the featherweight GOAT but backs himself to overhaul Brazilian by ‘fighting absolute killers’ ahead of UFC 273 clash with ‘The Korean Zombie’

  • Champion Alexander Volkanovski has won all of his fights in the UFC so far
  • Australian saw off Max Holloway twice and it seems like his reign could last
  • Jose Aldo is generally considered to be the greatest featherweight of all time
  • Volkanovski thinks he has some way to go before eclipsing the Brazilian

Alexander Volkanovski believes he still has a way to go before becoming the UFC’s greatest featherweight of all time.

The Australian has looked phenomenal so far and remains undefeated in the organisation, claiming the belt from Max Holloway, beating him in a rematch and then dispatching Brian Ortega.

He faces Chang Sung Jung this Saturday at UFC 273 and is looking to add another title defence to his CV.

When asked whether he considers himself the greatest featherweight, he said: ‘I believe I’ve still got more work to do.

‘I give Aldo the respect. To be champion for as long as he was is incredible. No matter – the opposition that I’m facing with guys like himself and Max, I think I’m fighting absolute killers.

‘It’s pretty clear. But at the same time, to be champion that long, there’s going to be days you don’t show up, injuries, bad weight cuts – we’ve all done it.

‘It’s a nightmare to not be on a day you’ve got to defend your belt. And for him to be for so long, it’s saying something.’

‘Do I think I need that many defenses? No, I don’t,’ Volkanovski said.

‘Do I think I’m there right now? No, I’m not going to claim that yet. I’m going to go ahead and do my thing. If people want to claim it for me, all good. But I’ve still got some work to do.’

Volkanovski beat Aldo by unanimous decision back in 2019 and the Brazilian has since moved down to bantamweight.

The featherweight champion will take some beating and is predicting a finish of ‘The Korean Zombie’ this weekend.

He said: ‘I want to finish Zombie and I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t happen within three rounds.

Which isn’t me trying to hype up the fight. Just as I’m not saying it to prove people wrong.

‘I want to finish Zombie because I know I can. It’s what I now expect of myself.’
