Alec Baldwin: Actor calls for ‘misguided’ lawsuit filed by family of Halyna Hutchins to be dismissed

Alec Baldwin is asking for a lawsuit filed by the parents and sister of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins to be dismissed by a judge.

In court documents filed on Thursday, the actor said Olga Solovey, Anatolii Androsovych, and Svetlana Zemko filed the suit to “obtain compensation” following Ms Hutchins’s death in October 2021.

“The loss of a daughter and sister is undoubtedly painful in any circumstance,” the court document read, according to Sky News’ US partner network NBC.

“Yet Plaintiffs – who had been distanced from Halyna physically, financially, and emotionally for years before her death – have no viable cause of action against Defendants.

“This action is especially misguided.”

The family of the 42-year-old cinematographer filed the lawsuit back in February after she was killed during filming on set of the film, just outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

It alleges battery, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and loss of consortium, which is when a plaintiff seeks to recover compensation for damages to certain relationships on which they are mutually dependent.

Baldwin, 65, was rehearsing with a gun for a scene when the weapon went off, killing Ms Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

The star has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to two charges of involuntary manslaughter earlier this year.

The actor was also sued by Ms Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, their son and estate, alleging that reckless behaviour and cost-cutting led to her death.

A settlement was reached outside of court in October 2022.

The next court hearing is scheduled for 9 June.
