Ajay Devgn: ‘The Great Indian Murder’ is a grand show and I have immense faith in its director Tigmanshu Dhulia – Exclusive – Times of India

Ajay Devgn’s first OTT show as a producer has gone online. Devgn has co-produced this show with Priti Sinha, daughter of ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ producer Vinay Sinha.

We caught up with Devgn for a brief chat. Read on…

Tell us about your friendship with Priti Sinha, who has co-produced ‘The Great Indian Murder’ show with you…

It would suffice to say Priti and I go back a long way. She’s family.

How did you think of foraying into OTT as a producer?

OTT is the present. It’s also the future. All of us know by now that cinema/OTT must exist side by side. I made ‘Tribhanga’ with Kajol for OTT. Then Priti came to me with the idea of adapting the globally-renowned author Vikas Swarup’s book ‘The Six Suspects’.

And then?

We got Tigmanshu Dhulia, a popular name in the film/OTT space to direct for us.

How long did it take you to say yes when Priti came to you with the idea of making this show?

Frankly, when she suggested it, I hadn’t read the book. I took a quick narration from her on the basic plot and found it interesting enough to contemplate joining hands with her on the production. It’s a book that has drama, intrigue and thrills. I also have immense faith in Tigmanshu, having followed his film work closely.

How was the casting done?

Casting is always a process. We had a wish list and Pratik Gandhi/Richa Chadha and many other names who we have in the show were on that list. Interestingly the characters that Pratik and Richa play in ‘The Great Indian Murder’ are not a part of the book. Their tracks have been written fresh. Tigmanshu has put his might behind it along with writer Vijay Maurya.

How involved were you at every stage?

If you are asking me if I was present at the shoot, I wasn’t. The actual groundwork was done by the ADF-RLE teams as it is in the case of all productions unless I am acting/directing.

Before we went on set, Tigmanshu gave me a narration. Then, I was involved in the process of casting because they bounced off certain names with me (pauses).

I got weekly reports on the actual proceedings from the various locations we shot in. It’s a grand show that has been shot in Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Port Blair and across several destinations in central India.

How much OTT do you see?
I watch at least two/three episodes of some show each day on my Ipad. I loved Kevin Costner/Kelly Reilly’s ‘Yellowstone’.
