After Assam, Haryana govt issues diktat to ‘overweight’ cops: ‘Shape up or…’
After the Assam government’s diktat to policemen to work on their fitness, it is now the Haryana government that has issued a similar order to its “overweight” cops to work on their bodies. Else, they will be transferred to Police Lines. According to an order issued by Haryana Home and Health Minister Anil Vij, the Haryana policemen who are “overweight” and have pot bellies will be transferred to Police Lines.
The overweight police personnel will be allowed to join their duties once they are back in shape, the order mentioned.
An official statement from the home department said, “Keeping in view the fitness of the officers and personnel of Haryana Police, Home Minister Anil Vij has today issued written directions to the Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department that many of the police personnel in the police department have become overweight and by the time, their weight is being increased more, should be transferred to the police line.”
The state health minister issued written instructions in this regard to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, keeping in mind the fitness of police officers and personnel.
The order mentioned: “In this regard, the Home Minister Anil Vij has today issued a written direction to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department so that the police personnel whose weight has increased and continues to increase with time, can be fit through exercise.”
“Only after that, they should be deputed on duty,” it added. Anil Vij said the order was issued after it was observed that many police personnel have become “overweight and by time, their weight is being increased more”.
In a statement, Anil Vij said, “I would like that all the police officers/ personnel, who have become overweight be transferred to police line and make them do exercise unless they get fit for duty.”
Just a few days ago, the Assam police instructed all the policemen in the department to get fit or take voluntary retirement from the service. The directions came as Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma met senior police officers of the state in April and asked them to “remove deadwood” from the force.
