AFL club’s final round team list says it all

Ten players have been forced out of the Tigers’ side to face Hawthorn — six of whom will ride the pine through injury.

The mass changes bring Jason Castagna, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Mabior Chol, Marlion Pickett and five other Tigers into Damien Hardwick’s 22.

Among the inclusions is three-time premiership winner David Astbury, who will play his last game of AFL footy this weekend before hanging up the boots.

The record number of changes made ahead of a VFL/AFL game is 13 — and a team has only made ten or more changes on 11 occasions before.

It is the first time Richmond has made nine changes to its team since 1949, according to Twitter stats guru @sirswampthing.

Richmond will hope its disappointing campaign can end on a high with a win over the resurgent Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

Elsewhere, a handful of AFL players are preparing to run out for their final games this weekend. Carlton’s Eddie Betts (playing his 350th match), 400-game player Shaun Burgoyne and foundation Suns player Jarrod Harbrow are among those calling it a day at the end of Round 23.

For Port Adelaide, Steven Motlop and Trent McKenzie come into the side facing the Western Bulldogs in a blockbuster on Friday night.

Geelong and Melbourne each welcome back a triumvirate of stars for the other top-four clash of the weekend. Influential defender Steven May comes in for the Dees, as does suspended vice-captain Jack Viney and forward Tom McDonald.

For the Cats, sharpshooting forward Gary Rohan re-enters the fray, alongside Gryan Miers and Tom Atkins.

He earned a rest last for what turned out to be a tense clash with the Kangaroos, but Sydney veteran Lance Franklin is raring to go for the Swans’ Gold Coast encounter.

A top-four finish is now out of reach for Sydney, who seem destined to meet cross-town rivals GWS in the first week of the finals series.

A handful of Eagles, including Connor West, Jake Waterman and Jamaine Jones, will take to the Gabba for West Coast’s clash with Brisbane. To make the finals, the Eagles will need to win that game and also hope other results go their way, however, the prognosis doesn’t look good for Adam Simpson’s men.

After missing last week’s drubbing at the hands of Port Adelaide, Carlton co-captain Patrick Cripps is back in action for what could prove the last game of David Teague’s tenure in the top job at Princes Park. The Giants welcome back suspended small forward Toby Greene for the clash.
