Afghanistan: Taliban, former president Hamid Karzai discuss govt formation
Sources close to Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah said Amir Khan Motaqi, a senior member of the Taliban leadership, at a meeting with Afghan politicians on Monday, pledged to establish an inclusive government. Mutaqi met Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah earlier this week. “The discussion is how can an inclusive government be established that is accepted by all and that will lead society toward prosperity,” said Gul Rahman Qazi, a close aide to Hamid Karzai.
“They are busy in discussions about an inclusive government,” said Sayed Akbar Agha, head of the Rahe-Nejat Council of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Council will hold a special session on August 24 to address the “serious human rights concerns and situation in Afghanistan”. The move was made by Afghanistan and OIC and India backed the move.
At a press conference held in Kabul on Tuesday night, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated that soon they will reach a settlement through which an Islamic government will be established in the country. Mujahid claimed that Kabul’s security is improving day by day as their forces have been stationed at various places. He said the security of foreign embassies is important to them. This, according to sources, is part of their strategy to win the confidence of the international community. He even claimed that Taliban is committed to providing women their “rights” based on Islam.
The Taliban has three suggestions: No broadcast should contradict Islamic values, they should be impartial, no one should broadcast anything that goes against national interests. Mujahid said the Taliban can assure the world that Afghanistan will no longer be a hub for poppy cultivation or for the drugs business, and they need the world’s support to promote an alternative to poppy cultivation.
