In Football, The 20th edition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup kicks off today evening when India will face tournament debutants Iran at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai at 7.30 pm. 12 teams featuring across 30 games in 18 days across three stadiums Mumbai Football Arena (Mumbai), DY Patil Stadium (Navi Mumbai), and Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, (Pune).

This is the first time that the finals will have twelve teams, instead of the usual eight. There are three groups of four, with the top two and two best third-placed teams progressing to the quarterfinals. The four teams that make the semifinals also automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.  

Meanwhile, two members of the Indian Women’s Senior National Team for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 have tested positive for COVID-19, and are currently in isolation at a designated medical care facility.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Praful Patel on Monday said that matches of the women’s AFC Asian Cup will not be canceled due to positive COVID-19 cases if 13 players are available in each of the two competing teams.
