‘Ab khelne ka nahi pelne ka time hai’: Wasim Jaffer, fans hail ‘Lord Shardul’ on his 36-ball 57-run knock

Shardul Thakur wasn’t fit for the second Test at Lord’s (at his home ground as fans suggested, referring to his nickname ‘Lord’ on social media) but he got his chance to play in London, at the Oval in the fourth Test and the bowling all-rounder ensured he made his presence felt.

India were in tatters at 127/7 and were staring at another low total after being bowled out for 78 in the first innings of the third Test but Shardul Thakur chose violence over defence as he launched an assault on England bowlers smashing the fastest ever Test fifty in England overtaking Sir Ian Botham’s 32-ball fifty against New Zealand in 1986.

Thakur was watchful for the first few balls but after Rishabh Pant departed, Thakur took the onus on himself to get his side to a respectable total.

Thakur’s attack started in Woakes’ over with two fours on the first two balls of the 55th over. He just continued after that over, hitting a six off Overton in the next and smashing two fours and one six off Woakes’ next and Thakur was having a party on a pitch where other batsmen were not able to stay for long.

Playing on 43, Thakur smashed a four and a six off Ollie Robinson to bring up his second fifty in Test matches and fastest in England off just 31 balls. However, his fun was cut short by Woakes who trapped him LBW as the replays showed it was going on to hit the stumps after umpire had given him not out.

The fans, cricketers hailed ‘Lord Shardul Thakur’ as he is known on social media for his attacking knock and playing a salvaging hand as far as India’s innings was concerned.
