Aaron Rodgers ‘held conversations’ with Jets Monday with the Packers QB ‘open to idea of New York’
Aaron Rodgers ‘held conversations’ with the Jets Monday with the Packers quarterback ‘open to the idea of going to New York’ after Gang Green target Derek Carr joined New Orleans Saints
Aaron Rodgers has ‘held conversations’ with the quarterback-needy Jets, according to a new report – the same day Derek Carr signed with the Saints.
Rodgers has yet to give Green Bay a decision on his future, with a breakup looking increasingly possible despite the fact he’s still under contract with the team.
And according to former ESPN NFL host Trey Wingo, Rodgers and the Jets met Monday, with the four-time MVP reportedly ‘open to the idea’ of heading to New York.
Rodgers, who signed a three-year, $150million extension with the Packers last year, could theoretically stay put under his current deal through 2026, and it will take a trade for the Jets to prise him out of Green Bay.
Following an ESPN report in January that cited league sources who believed the franchise preferred to ‘move on’ from him – and the lack of commitment from both sides since – the possibility of a trade now seems realistic.
Aaron Rodgers’ time with the Packers could be coming to an end after 18 seasons
He reportedly met with the Jets on Monday, with the team looking to upgrade at quarterback
However, the Jets would be forced to take on his pricey contract, unless the Packers agree to help pay some of the remaining cash on the deal.
That may well be worth it for the Jets, as a roster with defensive playmakers and Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson at receiver was doomed by poor quarterback play as the team missed the playoffs despite a 6-3 start.
Zach Wilson continued to struggle mightily in his second season, while Mike White showed promise but is now an unrestricted free agent – and surely would not be chosen over Rodgers.
New York may also have a greater urgency to sign Rodgers now that Carr, long rumored to be one of their targets at quarterback, is off the table.
The four-year contract he inked with New Orleans is worth $150million, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport. The agreement also includes $100m in guarantees, according to Rapoport.
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said last week he hadn’t spoken much with Rodgers since their end of season meetings, and declined to say outright whether or not the team wanted him back.
‘Those discussions have to happen and making sure that it’s a right fit,’ he said .
‘But obviously we know the kind of player that Aaron is.’

Rodgers had a disappointing 2022 season by his lofty standards, throwing 12 interceptions (his most since 2008) as the Packers missed the playoffs.
The team has not returned to the Super Bowl since winning it in 2011.
Additionally, Rodgers recently returned from a four-day darkness retreat that he hoped would provide clarity on his next step.
Rodgers said on The Pat McAfee Show that he hoped to ‘have a better sense of where I’m at in my life’ upon returning from the four-day ordeal, which he emerged from on February 22.
