Whatever your thoughts on Baz Luhrmann’s sequin-strewn, surreal Elvis, the power of Austin Butler’s barnstorming lead performance was certainly undeniable. Now, the Oscar nominee is passing the baton to another heartthrob for yet another auteur-driven, visually ravishing take on this tumultuous period of music history: Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. The crucial difference in this case, however? The sweeping new A24-produced drama will feature the king of rock and roll, as played by Euphoria’s dashing Jacob Elordi, but focus instead on his wife, Priscilla Presley (Mare of Easttown’s Cailee Spaeny)—welcome news for those of us who were disheartened by Olivia DeJonge’s startling lack of screen time as the musical icon’s partner in the previous biopic.
“Priscilla is such a minor character in [Elvis] so I never felt like I was treading on the same territory,” Coppola told Vogue last October, as she was gearing up to shoot Priscilla. “I think it’ll be interesting to have two completely different interpretations of the same events. There are some aspects of Elvis’s career included [in this film] but it all sort of plays out in the background of their relationship and her developing her identity. I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland. She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world—kind of similarly to Marie Antoinette.”
Penned by Coppola herself and based on Priscilla’s bestselling 1985 memoir *Elvis and Me—*with the living legend also serving as an executive producer—the upcoming release will chronicle the pair’s controversial romance and chart Priscilla’s life from the age of 15 to 27. She famously met the superstar when she was just 14, and he was 24 and in the midst of military service in Germany. The pair tied the knot when she was 21; they had a daughter, Lisa Marie, a year later; and finally separated after six years of marriage.
Since joining Instagram last autumn, Coppola has offered fans glimpses of Priscilla’s set and her key visual references for the film, from photographs of Priscilla and Elvis’s wedding day and shots of the latter performing, to the glorious ’60s fashion we can expect to see and a tantalizing sneak peek of Spaeny preparing for filming in a candy-colored Memphis hair salon.
