Andrea Lieberman is happy to see fashion revisiting the clean, sensual silhouettes of the early 2000s. She’s never been one for prairie dresses and puffed sleeves, for starters, and she hit her stride in that decade as Jennifer Lopez’s stylist (lest you forget, Lieberman was responsible for J.Lo’s plunging green Versace number at the 2000 Grammys). Since 2009, she’s built A.L.C. into a brand of luxe essentials and distinctive tailoring for women like her who prioritize style over logos and trends.
Lieberman’s spring 2022 collection felt right in step with the collections we’ve seen on the runways this month: neons mixed with earth tones (an influence of Bottega Veneta’s Daniel Lee, ditto the pillowy bags); hints of utility; comfortable suits; and subtly sexy cut-outs at the ribcage and spine. Her interests typically lie in the tweaks in fit and proportion that can reframe a classic piece: pumping up the shoulders of a blazer, exploding the volume of an anorak, or adding smocking to a midi skirt to give it a drop-waist effect. That meant the big news here was the opening cream knit dress, a surprisingly crafty departure for Lieberman; another maxi style was entirely hand-crocheted. Lieberman said her team is focusing more on elevating their materials and techniques than reinventing the wheel, a pursuit the A.L.C. customer will no doubt appreciate.
