In a bid to channelise energy of the youth in constructive manner, the district administration will organise Bathinda Rural Olympic Games-2022 from August 1 till September-end. It is organising the event along with the Bathinda District Olympic Association.
The month-long sporting carnival will bring rural sportspersons to the fore and provide them with a platform to showcase their abilities.
Deputy Commissioner Shaukat Ahmed Parray, who is also chairman of the Bathinda District Olympic Association, said, “For the first time, we will be holding the Rural Olympics in the district. The main goals of the event are youth engagement, promoting good values, healthy lifestyle and instilling pride and confidence.”
In the event, competitions of 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 1,500 m, discus throw, shot put, hockey, volleyball, football, 5-km and 10-km runs will be held in two formats of Under-19 age group and senior group (above 19). The games will be held in the boys’ and girls’ categories.
As per norms, the villages will send individual athletes and teams. Each village will have a flag to be carried by its team. At first, villages will hold internal contests to choose best athletes and teams.
Secondly, inter-village competitions will be held at the block level. Best two athletes and teams in each format for each gender will proceed to represent the district. At the district-level, teams and individuals of nine rural development blocks of Bathinda will compete against each other.
Best two athletes and teams coming out of the block level will represent their villages in the district. The opening and closing ceremonies of the event will be held at Sports School, Ghudda.
