Katie Holmes has perfected the art of girl-next-door style over the years, championing minimalist staples that can be worn time and time again. This is particularly the case when it comes to her shoe collection, with her Acne Bladie loafers, New Balance sneakers, and Birkenstocks among her trusty favorites that are on constant rotation.
More recently, the actor has been championing sustainable footwear brands, too, including a pair of flip-flop heels from Reformation, which she wore to the opening of a new Christian Siriano boutique in Westport, Connecticut, last week.
Made from recycled leather, linen, and plant-based foam, the shoes have a lower carbon footprint compared to a similar pair made of conventional leather.
Another recent addition to her wardrobe is Brother Vellies’s Togo heels, which are hand-woven by artisans in Burkina Faso and made in small batches. Paired with a sleek black dress by another conscious brand, Marina Moscone, Holmes shows how the mules are the perfect way to elevate a simple look this summer.
Meanwhile, Chloé’s Joy clogs, made from responsibly-sourced leather, are also a staple for Holmes right now, whether teamed with a summer knit dress or jeans. Indeed, the style muse has long been a fan of the French fashion house, with Holmes spotted wearing the brand a number of times since eco-minded creative director Gabriela Hearst took the helm in 2020 (the Edith boots are another firm favorite in winter).
Footwear is a tricky area when it comes to sustainability, particularly considering leather is known to have a high environmental impact. Meanwhile, vegan alternatives are often made from synthetics that are fossil-fuel-derived and are difficult to recycle.
Still, Holmes has been an early adopter of brands like Aera, a vegan label that offsets its impact by 110 per cent, and Rothy’s, which makes its footwear from recycled plastic bottles (the Duchess of Sussex is also a fan). In the past, the actor has also worn sneaker brand Veja, which uses chrome-free leather as well as a vegan alternative made from cotton covered with corn starch.
With eco-conscious footwear brands on the rise, expect to see Holmes adding more to her collection in the future (given her penchant for a party shoe, we think Piferi is a perfect match). But as the actor goes to show, the true secret to a sustainable shoe collection is investing in footwear that you’ll continue wearing in the years to come—those Acne loafers and Birks aren’t going anywhere.
