Report: Ovechkin trademarks ‘THE GR8 CHASE’ with Gretzky’s record in sight

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has trademarked “THE GR8 CHASE,” ESPN reported Thursday.

Ovechkin, who became the third player in NHL history to score 800 goals with a hat trick on Tuesday, is behind only Gordie Howe (801) and Wayne Gretzky (894) on the all-time leaderboard.

“It’s not even a question that he will pass me, and I think it’s great,” Gretzky told David Waldstein of The New York Times last year. “There is no doubt that, ultimately, he will break the record.”

Ovechkin looks to tie, and pass, Gordie Howe when the Capitals take on the Dallas Stars on Thursday night. Then he’ll be solely chasing down Gretzky.
